Longmont Man Shot in Boulder

Update - Apr 18 (HI BOB!!!!)
Boulder police ticket man who shot friend

"Lewis Guthrie, 58, has been ticketed on suspicion of misdemeanor third-degree assault and prohibited use of a weapon."

Yes! Finally! Someone remembered - it's illegal to discharge a firearm within the city limits!

Apparently all those stacks of NRA literature piled on top of the lawbooks slowed em down. Glad to see that the sonorous tones of Heston's voice have finally faded enough for the Boulder Police to hear the voice of the law again.

-----

When I read the story I thought 'Oh my God! The liberals in Boulder have gone nuts - they're shooting people!!!!!' ... but then I read the rest of the story....

Huntley said O’Connor was visiting his friend, Lewis Guthrie, 58, at his Boulder home. After dinner, according to police, the men went downstairs where Guthrie was showing off his new Springfield Armory XD 9-mm handgun.

When Guthrie turned around, Huntley said, O’Connor reloaded the gun and chambered a round.

“Unaware that his friend had replaced the ammunition,” she said, Guthrie picked up the firearm and a round went off.

The men later told police that Guthrie never touched the trigger, but rather the ammunition went off when the slide was moved forward for disassembly.

The bullet penetrated O’Connor’s left thumb and went into his left thigh.

So, suddenly all the gun sales don't bother me nearly so much.

Heckuva job kids, heckuva job.

The comment stream says it so much better than I ever could:

I lose more friends that way...

nothing "oops" about it. When we stop calling these things "accidents" and start calling them "negligence" we can start fixing the problem.

As APM said - the gun didn't go off on it's own, it was through careless action of the owner that it went off.

1. all guns are always loaded. no exceptions
2. don't point a gun at anything you aren't willing to see destroyed
3. be sure of your target. and what's behind the target.

follow those 3 rules and your chances of "accidents" go down dramatically.

what if I thought about a gun. Would that make it go off?

Posted by texarado on April 10, 2009 at 2:18 p.m.

Guns don't shoot people. Dumb people shoot people.

Posted by lcsyzygy on April 10, 2009 at 2:20 p.m.

Boy, I feel so much safer now knowing that another 'good guy' like this owns a gun to keep the 'bad guys' away (not to mention friends, relatives, neighbors, pets and innocent bystanders).

Too bad more citizens like him don't own weapons, there'd be soooooo much more crime thwarted.

Always make sure your gun is loaded when showing it off.
Load it if necessary.

"And the National Rifle Association says that, "Guns don't kill people, people do,”but I think the gun helps, you know? I think it helps. I just think just standing there going, "Bang!" That's not going to kill too many people, is it?"

9mm, the less lethal alternative.

American Gun MADNESS !!

While dialing 911, Guthrie's wife yelled "This is why we can't have nice things!"

civilibertarian:

You left out the 4th rule:

Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

Guthrie may believe he did not touch trigger, but that is only because he lacks the discipline to conciously keep his finger off the trigger.

Darwin runner up.

Idiots. Um, do I have anything else to say about this?

Nope, just Idiots.

Posted by Donkey__Hotay on April 10, 2009 at 4:09 p.m.

Why does the NRA hate it's members so much?

Posted by orbison on April 10, 2009 at 4:10 p.m.

Love the "...Guthrie never touched the trigger..."!

"Wha--! It wasn't me! It wasn't me!"

Incidents like these give shooting your friend a bad name.

Posted by UAN on April 10, 2009 at 4:10 p.m.

Darwin Award - the one award where winning means coming in last. Runner up is preferable to winning, not sure by how much though, depends on the extent of the injuries I suppose...

Of course Gary is just waiting to answer the obvious question -- Should mental defectives be allowed to possess firearms?

Posted by Donkey_Hotay on April 10, 2009 at 4:22 p.m.

And this week's NRA sponsored Dick Cheney Marksmanship Trophy goes to -- Lewis Guthrie !

Posted by Dunkterfunk on April 10, 2009 at 4:24 p.m.

Good God what idiots!!!! The owner did the right thing by unloading the gun and checking the chamber before handing it to his friend. I don't know WHAT THE HELL his friend was thinking by loading the clip and chambering a round. How stupid is this guy. And to not even tell his friend he did that. Moron, plain and simple.

Maybe we had his eye on his friends wife....

Is the Camera absolutely positive on the names? I'm almost sure Beavis and Butthead were involved.

Posted by FuriousB on April 10, 2009 at 4:40 p.m.

This does nothing to refute my assertion that one of the biggest problems with guns is that the people who are attracted to them are usually idiots.

Posted by Donkey_Hotay on April 10, 2009 at 4:47 p.m.

Should idiots be allowed to possess firearms?

Posted by Jesus_was_a_socialist on April 10, 2009 at 7:54 p.m.

I know what makes my gun go off. But then that place got raided by the Lafayette puh-leece department.

Posted by Pancho_Sanza on April 11, 2009 at 1:44 a.m.

Now you know why the Government doesn't even trust its citizens with firecrackers much less firearms!

Stupid is as Stupid does.

Posted by susan_g on April 11, 2009 at 8:01 a.m.

Owning a gun in one thing but when your idea of entertainment is "showing off" your weapon then you have some issues that are better dealt with in a psychiatrist's office.

"...the bullet went through the man, an office door, dry wall, ricocheted off a filing cabinet and landed underneath an office chair."

Mention that to the shrink, too, Guthrie. He or she can help you address that "envy" problem that's going on.

Guns don't die, People die.

Now, where are all the second amendment whackos?

Posted by wgstrand on April 11, 2009 at 1:23 p.m.

If kitchen appliances are outlawed, only outlaws will have kitchen appliances.

Especially that Cuisinart "assault appliance"! It needs to be banned!

What about an ammendment to legalize the shooting of NRA members by other members?

Posted by Pancho_Sanza on April 12, 2009 at 1:26 p.m.

We can call that the Dick Cheney amendment.
