Longmont's Finest - and others

Well, the old flour mill in south Longmont burned last night. Good coverage from the Times-Call.

Kudos to Battalion Chief Rick VanderVelde, his firefighters and the Longmont Police for keeping this from spreading.

The comments on the story show the two sides of Longmont very clearly:
When I read this story this morning on the Internet, as I do everyday, I was so saddened to see some wonderful old memories go up in flames. Many years ago, I remember hauling many truck loads of farm crops to this old mill, and with each trip was a meeting of some fellow farmer's wives, and the many chats we had. I used to sit there waiting from my truck to be dumped, and be amazed at all the different dirty old caps the men wore. Yep, I was one of those "farm ladies" who did the "hauling". Dates me, doesn't it?

Hard-working woman, truck driver and someone that values the history of Longmont. The majority of the city wanted this landmark restored, but Julia Pirnack and the thugs before her fought tooth and nail against it.
Longmont, you are a piece of work! A few months ago, when the Police and Fire Department unionization issue was hot, many of you wrote in to say the police and firemen were a bunch of lazy, overpaid, do-nothing slackers. Too bad it takes an incident such as this to put their skill and heroism "in your face". PS: Great photo's from talented camera jockeys!

The Fire and Police collective bargaining deal passed with a just-barely majority - despite a pitched battle of lies and smears funded (I believe) by the reddest of the red-state rednecks and wealthy n'eer-give-a-shits. I wonder if these anti-union heroes will thank the firefighters when their neighborhood is saved from disaster? More like yell at them to get their engines out of the way so they can leave for (yet another) vacation from reality with the little people.
I have to agree; good riddance. One less place for the homeless to get cancer from asbestos in this old nasty building. I mean, no one was going to do anything with it anyway, certainly not the city; so now it will be brought down by fire. A safety hazard for the homeless who squatted there and a saftey hazard for the Firefighters who had to put out the blaze.

For a city with dozens of churches this comment speaks volumes. The homeless are apparently just trash to be swept aside, despite Jesus' admonitions about the least of us. Maybe I just missed all those delegations of faithful rushing over there every night to bring comfort and succor to the 'lost sheep'.
My first thought: good riddance. Finally, fire will do to that eyesore what the city just couldn't bring itself to do, properly. However, as I contemplate, I realize it will now sit there as a charred pile of rubble for the next 20 years. Maybe we can commission a study. I've given up on this town having any vision.

Spoken like a true Lunatic Fringer. Maybe we can commission a study to determine if it's even possible to remove that massive stick jammed up their collective asses... or at least tone down the sanctimonious moanings/barkings/crotch-licking. I kinda doubt it, the behavior is pretty well set-in and habitual. He's given up on the town having any vision? If he means visions of obscene theocratic takeovers, he's right to give up - that dream is stone-cold dead.
We watched from 1st and Main last night. I just pray there was no one inside. Thank you to our hard working firefighters and law enforcement teams for everything they did last night.

Care for possible victims, kudos for the hardworking emergency staff. Must be one of them bleedin-heart commie pinko libruls. Who needs a heart when you've got a GUN?
"Tear this one down, it's beyond hope"... Thanks City sit on your backside and study chickens for months while opportunities for redevelopment to add some character and class to Longmont burn to the ground.

And not one word about the PREVIOUS CITY COUNCILS. It always amazes me how the right-wing nutjobs can ever-so-neatly shift blame. Hey, Einstein, your 'party' just lost the last TWO elections - badly. Maybe puffing up your little bully-feathers and strutting around shitting on the majority-elected government isn't a good tactic anymore.

Oh, but don't let me stop you.

Heaven forfend - please, continue proving the "Lunatic Fringe" label is apt.

You're doin a heckuva job.
