Massive Fail for the Preacher of Hate - Phelps loses $10.9 Million Judgement

From the BBC News1

The father of Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder, a Marine who died serving in Iraq in March 2006, has won a $10.9 million judgment against the Westboro Baptist Church, the group that picketed his son's funeral with signs reading "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "You're going to hell." Albert Snyder's lawyer urged the jury to ensure the damages were high enough to stop the church campaigning.
"Do not bring your circus of hate to Maryland again"
- Craig Trebilcock, Attorney for Albert Snyder
I'm so gratified that America is waking up from it's long, drugged slumber and telling this vicious and evil man 'we do not agree'.

Big hat tip to the Drudge Retort (giggles yet again at David Brown)

1. Because you will NOT see this in any Colorado newspaper until it's old and cold - certainly not one owned by Gannett.

From the article:

"Members of the church, however, reportedly greeted the verdict with tight-lipped smiles.

Daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper - co-defendant along with another daughter, Rebecca Phelps-Davis - called the verdict a blow against free speech and vowed to continue picketing military funerals."

Free Speech as a defense for Hate.

God Bless America.

I'm wondering where the Patriot Guard Riders (http://www.patriotguard.org) stand on this. Surely they don't like Phelps since one of their stated goals is to "Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors." Maybe having a group of Patriot Guard Riders at the next gay soldier's funeral would deter Phelps?
